Why I Keep a Notebook for My Sewing Projects

Posted on January 27, 2026February 7, 2026 by admin

One of the most helpful habits I’ve picked up as a maker is keeping a notebook just for my projects. It’s nothing fancy. Just pages filled with measurements, sketches, fabric notes, and little reminders to my future self. But over time, it’s become one of my most valuable tools.

Every time I start something new, I jot down the basics: what pattern or idea I’m using, the size I cut, fabric choices, and anything I change along the way. Sometimes I’ll tape in a scrap of fabric or make a quick sketch of a block layout. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be useful.

The best part is being able to flip back through it later. When I start a new quilt or bag, I can look up what worked before and what didn’t. I don’t have to guess what seam allowance I used or how wide I cut binding last time. It’s already there, waiting for me.

It’s also become something more than just a reference. My notebook feels like a little library of projects, a record of everything I’ve made and learned. Each page holds a memory of the time I spent creating, the mistakes I figured out, and the small victories along the way.

Sometimes I’ll look back at older pages and see how much I’ve improved, or remember a project I had completely forgotten about. It’s a quiet reminder that progress happens slowly, one stitch and one page at a time.

If you sew, quilt, or make anything regularly, I really recommend keeping some kind of project notebook. It doesn’t have to be organized or aesthetic, just consistent. Future you will be grateful.

And honestly, there’s something really satisfying about knowing all your ideas, experiments, and finished pieces live together in one place, like a personal archive of creativity.
